Why I Built Fred: A Personal Goal Setting App

I did not set out to build a goal app

I set out to reach my goals. I set out to be inspired for goals I otherwise wouldn't have set myself.

And like a lot of people, I started with a few goals and forgot about the others. Not because I did not care, but because life got busy. I simply lived my normal routine. And while doing this I simply forgot to work on my big month to month goals. Also for some goals I simply did not know where to start. So I asked Claude and ChatGPT about what to do and was surprised about the plan these tools came up with. And then I tracked them in Apple Reminders, but always felt like there should be a better way of keeping track of my goals, without feeling guilty when not reaching one.

Fred started as a personal fix for that.

I wanted an overview of what counts

The most important shift for me was separating everything I could do from what I should focus on.

I needed one place to see:

  • What my vision is
  • What I am working toward this year
  • What deserves attention this month
  • What to do next to achieve my goal

Simply a cookbook for goals. For achieving goals and not merely setting goals.

AI steps were an experiment that stuck

The AI step generator began as a small experiment: Can AI help me figure out what to do next when I am stuck or when I simply don't know where to start best?

It turned out to be genuinely valuable. Not as a gimmick, but as a practical nudge when a goal feels vague or overwhelming.

Sometimes I need inspiration more than discipline.

The AI meets me there.

I tried both OpenAI and Claude and then integrated the best model for goal setting into the Fred App.

The inspiration gallery changed how I choose goals

Before I commit to a goal, I often browse the Inspiration Gallery in Fred.

Curated ideas. Real directions. A gentle way to discover what I actually want to work on, not just what sounds impressive.

It helped me name goals I would have never written down on my own.

Goals help you grow, and building products is my joy

Working on goals changed how I show up: more intentional, more honest about trade offs, more willing to celebrate small wins.

Building Fred feeds the same part of me. I love product building. I love thoughtful design. I love making something that feels calm to open on a Sunday evening.

So building Fred was also one of the first goals I've set and tracked with Fred.

Besides this I also set a bunch of goals related to community building, cooking more healthy and keeping an active lifestyle.

If Fred helps you grow even a little, and feels good while you use it, that is the whole point.

Still building, still using it myself

Fred is not a finished monument. It is a living product I use for my own year plan, my own vision board, my own monthly check ins.

I built it because I needed it.

If you have ever felt the same, that your goals matter but your system does not, I hope Fred gives you a quieter, clearer place to start.

How to Achieve Big Goals With Small, Actionable Steps

Huge goals feel inspiring until a few weeks after. For me this is mostly because, I set goals, that seem to big to achieve and then I simply forget about them or life gets in its way. The day I fiexed this was, when I started breaking each goal into concrete steps you can actually do this week, then showing up for them one at a time.

How I Plan My Year With Fred

I do not plan twelve perfect months in January. I set a vision, pick one or two focus goals per month, check in regularly, and add new goals as life happens, realistic, flexible, and actually doable.
